After graduating from high school, he received higher education in 1944–1949 at the oilfield faculty of the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute, majoring in mining engineering. In 1951, Azad Mirzajanzadeh defended his Ph.D., and in 1957 - his doctoral dissertation in technical sciences. In 1959 he received the title of professor, in 1962 he became a corresponding member, and in 1968 a full member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences.
Azad Mirzajanzadeh began his teaching career in 1944 as a teacher at secondary school number 44 in Baku. In 1948-1958, he held the positions of senior laboratory assistant, junior researcher, senior researcher and head of department at the Institute of Oil and Oil Expedition of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. In 1958–1968 he worked as the head of a laboratory at the Oil Production Research Institute under the Ministry of Oil Industry of Azerbaijan, and in 1966–1969 at the Institute of Problems in Mechanics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1969-1973 he was the head of the joint laboratory of the Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of the Oil Industry of the USSR, and in 1973-1989 he was the head of the oil and gas dynamics laboratory of the All-Union Oil Research Institute. Since 1992, he has been the director of the Research Institute of Oil and Gas Geotechnological Problems and Chemistry at the Azerbaijan Oil Academy.
Azad Mirzajanzadeh worked as an assistant professor in 1951-1957, in 1957-1959 he was a professor at the Department of Theoretical Mechanics of the Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University), and from 1959 until the end of his life he was the head of the department at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy. He was also the author of several projects related to the teaching of exact sciences in secondary schools.
In 1962, 1964, 1967, 1969, 1980 he lectured at various technical universities in European countries, participated in scientific conferences.
In 1992-2001 he was the chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 1993-2001 he headed the State Committee for Science and Technology.
Under the leadership of Academician A. Kh. Mirzajanzadeh, the theoretical and scientific foundations for the use of non-Newtonian fluids, heterogeneous systems, and physical fields in oil and gas production were developed. On his initiative, mathematical methods were widely used in various areas of the oil and gas industry. Academician Azad Mirzajanzadeh is the founder of the field of re-technology (description). The scientist for the first time created the theoretical foundations of non-Newtonian oil fields and gas condensate systems. At the same time, the ideas put forward by academician Mirzajanzadeh are also relevant today and are bearing fruit.
Azad Mirzajanzadeh, who has contributed greatly to the development of Azerbaijani science, is known for his valuable research in the field of oilfield operations and applied mechanics. In his scientific works, the mechanics of technological processes in oil production, problems associated with the application of methods of mathematical physics were studied.
Azad Mirzajanzadeh is the author of 296 scientific papers and 62 inventions. In his scientific work, he paid special attention to the global optimization of oil and gas production processes. The main scientific achievement of the scientist is the preparation and application of dynamic methods for the development of offshore oil fields. In the last period of his life, the main scientific directions of his research were the synergetic analysis of oil and gas fields and the application of nanotechnologies in the oil industry.
Azad Mirzajanzadeh, who has an extremely wide range of interests, in addition to scientific creativity, was engaged in the training of highly qualified personnel, took an active part in creating a powerful scientific potential for the development of the economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The scientific activity of academician A. Kh. Mirzajanzadeh was inextricably linked with the training of scientific personnel. He has always been distinguished by his ability to select talented young people and create conditions for their advancement. Academician A. Kh. Mirzajanzadeh prepared 46 doctors and 224 candidates of sciences. He, as a supervisor and scientific consultant, paid special attention to the scientific work of applicants. Taking this into account, we can say that he trained more than 100 doctors and more than 400 candidates of sciences.
Among the students of Academician A. Kh. Mirzajanzadeh, such well-known foreign scientists as I. M. Ametov, R. N. Bakhtizin, O. V. Chubanov, M. M. Khasanov, V. P. Maksimov, N. R. Mavlyutov, G. B. Rassokhin, A. Shammazov, N. D. Tsakhadaia, Yu. Zaitsev and others should be especially noted.
The scientific and pedagogical activity of Academician A. Kh. Mirzajanzadeh was duly appreciated by the state. He was awarded the Order of Honor, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (twice), the Order of the October Revolution, the gold star "Hero of Vietnam", the gold medal named after P.L. Kapitsa, the badge and medal of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences "Knight of Science and Art", etc. The scientist was awarded the Azerbaijan State Prize (2 times), the Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Prize named after Academician I. M. Gubkin (3 times) and was also awarded medals and diplomas of the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy.
He was awarded the titles of Honorary Oilman of the USSR, Honorary Worker of the Gas Industry of the USSR, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Azerbaijan SSR, Honored Worker of the Fuel and Energy Complex of the Russian Federation, Honored Oilman of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
The merits of the outstanding scientist A. Kh. Mirzajanzadeh were highly appreciated by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. In 1998, he was awarded the “Istiglal” Order.
