Jabrayil is located in the southeastern part of the Lesser Caucasus, in the Gayane Plain and the Karabakh Range.
The area borders the Islamic Republic of Iran along the Araz River in the south. The area of the district is 1050 km². The region is mostly mountainous. The bank of the Araz River was once covered with dense tugai forests. The soils of the plains along the Araz are dark chestnut, characterized by high productivity.
The Jabrayil region was formed on August 8, 1930, and on January 4, 1963 it was liquidated and annexed to the Fuzuli region. The district was re-formed on June 17, 1964.
The Jabrayil region was occupied by the Armenian Armed Forces on August 23, 1993. In those years, the district consisted of 1 city, 4 settlements and 97 villages.
Before the occupation, there were 3 music schools, 12 houses of culture, 32 clubs, 10 car clubs, 78 libraries in the region. 508 cultural workers worked in 1 museum, and more than 1660 teachers worked in 72 schools. There was a local history museum in Jabrayil. The exposition of the museum included more than 20 thousand exhibits.
During the years of occupation in the Jabrayil region, the territory of which is 1050 square kilometers, 72 general education schools, 149 houses of culture, 132 historical monuments were brutally plundered and destroyed.

Forced migrants from Jabrayil were settled in more than 2 thousand settlements in 58 districts of our republic, as well as in refugee camps, freight cars and hostels. At the time of occupation, the population of the district was 52 thousand people. In the First Karabakh War, 362 residents of Jabrayil became martyrs, 191 became disabled.
During the "Horadiz" operation, carried out in 1994 under the leadership of the national leader Heydar Aliyev, along with more than 20 settlements of the Fuzuli region, the village of Jojug Marjanly of the Jabrayil region was liberated from occupation. However, the nearby Leletepe height was under the control of the enemy, which made it impossible to live in the village. Safe living here became possible after the Leletepe height was liberated from Armenian occupation in April 2016 because of a successful counter-offensive military operation of the Azerbaijani army.
Thus, conditions were created for the start of large-scale restoration work in those areas that were under the complete control of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, so that the civilian population, who historically lived here, could return to their homeland.
On September 27, 2020, in response to the start of the next large-scale military operations by Armenia, the launching of fire strikes on the positions of the Azerbaijani army and civilian settlements, a counter-offensive operation began. This operation, later called the «Iron Fist», turned into the Patriotic War.
From the first days of the Patriotic War, which began on September 27, 2020, the Azerbaijani army launched a counteroffensive. The villages of Boyuk Marjanly and Nyuzgar of the Jabrayil region, on October 3 the villages of Mehdili, Chakhirly, Ashagy Maralyan, Shaybey and Kuyjag, on October 4 the city of Jabrayil and 9 villages of the region were liberated from the occupation. October 4 will forever remain in our history. Because on October 4, the city of Jabrayil was liberated from the invaders, and this Victory had a very great meaning - for the first time in the first week of the war, a city, a regional center, was liberated.
Today, under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, major construction work is underway in the Jabrayil region, as well as on all our lands liberated from occupation. The creation of the "Araz Valley Economic Zone" is an important event for the development of the entire region, including the Jabrayil region. A 4-6-lane road is being laid in Jabrayil. A program for the phased restoration of all villages in the region has also been approved.
The Jabrayil region will be restored in a short time, and people who have lived as internally displaced persons for almost 30 years will return to their homeland.
The great care and attention of our state, the love of our people for creation will soon turn this charming region of Karabakh into a piece of paradise.
