Azerbaijan-Czech diplomatic relations

After gaining independence, Azerbaijan defined the development of relations with the Czech Republic in all areas as one of the important tasks in foreign policy. Taking into account the unique opportunities of this country in the European political arena, special attention was paid to raising relations to the level of strategic partnership.

The Czech Republic recognized the state independence of Azerbaijan on January 8, 1992. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on January 29, 1993. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Czech Republic was established on August 15, 2007.The Embassy of the Czech Republic in the Republic of Azerbaijan was established on December 1, 2009. 
  
The working group for Azerbaijani-Czech Inter-Parliamentary Relations was established in the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan on April 8, 2011. On July 19, 2011, the Czech-Azerbaijani Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group was established in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The Czech-Azerbaijan interparliamentary friendship group was established on May 24, 2012, in the Senate, the upper chamber of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The mentioned group is part of the Czech-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Chamber of Deputies. 
   
The mutual visits of the heads of state have had an important impact on the strengthening of cooperation between our countries from year to year. These visits open up new opportunities for the development of inter-state relations. During the mutual visits, the signing of joint agreements between the two countries, covering the most diverse areas, greatly contributes to the development of perspective cooperation between our states. 
          
29 documents have been signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic. On September 15, 2015, the "Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic" was signed within the framework of the official visit of the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan is one of the main trading partners of the Czech Republic. The trade turnover between the two countries is increasing every year. At present, 26 companies with Czech capital operate in Azerbaijan in the fields of services, communications, trade, construction, infrastructure and transport. The Czech Republic invested a total of 1.3 billion dollars in our country's fixed capital. Czech companies also participate as contractors in 6 projects worth 1.6 billion manats. Azerbaijan accounts for more than 88% of the trade turnover of the Czech Republic with the countries of the South Caucasus. Our countries cooperate in the fields of engineering, finance, trade and mutual investment. Azerbaijan exports crude oil to the Czech Republic. Azerbaijani oil accounts for a certain part in the energy balance of the Czech Republic – about 30 per cent. Czech businessmen also invested in the first stage of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line. 

Economic relations between Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic are regulated by the following agreements: "Convention between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Czech Republic for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income and property", "Agreement between the Ministry of Taxes of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic on cooperation in the field of Tax Administration", "Memorandum on cooperation between the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Finance of the Czech Republic", "Agreement on Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Czech Republic", "Agreement between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic for the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments", "Agreement on cooperation in the area of tourism between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Regional Development of the Czech Republic". 
 
Great attention is also paid to cooperation in the humanitarian sphere between Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic. On July 20-29, 2007, the 33rd Summer Film School was held in Uherske Hradište, Czech Republic. Within the framework of the Caucasian film days, "Shared bread", "Another life", "Nasimi", "Family", "Khram Vozdukha", "Three girls", " Petroleum " and other films were screened at the event. On September 23, 2009, the Czech director, Oscar winner Y. Sverak participated in the "East-West" international film festival held in Baku. Czech Moravian folk music ensemble performed at the event. On May 30, 2012, a quartet concert of the Azerbaijani jazzman Shahin Novrasli was held in Prague gala evening. On November 27, 2014, solemn opening ceremony of exhibition "Azerbaijan - magical land of fire" was held in the building of the Czech National Museum in Prague. On April 11, 2019, an exhibition dedicated to Azerbaijani culture, jointly organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the Czech Republic and the Baku Slavic University (BSU) was staged at the Philosophy Department of the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. 
 
The current level of relations between Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic suggests that the cooperation between our countries has entered a new stage of development.
