National Hero of Azerbaijan Polad Hashimov

Polad Israil oghlu Hashimov was born on 2 January 1975, in Vandam settlement of Gabala district.  Subsequently, his family moved to the city of Sumgait. In 1992, he completed his studies at Sumgait Secondary School No. 34. In August of the same year, he was accepted to the Military Institute named after Heydar Aliyev, which he graduated in 1995 with a degree in motorized infantry.

In December 1992, he participated in the defense of the villages of Marzili and Novruzlu in the Aghdam region, took part in preventing an attempted coup d'état during the events of 1993, also participated in the training of the 702nd Motorized Rifle Brigade, and conducted successful operations to liberate the villages of Fuzuli.

In February 1994, participated in the battles for the Guzgu, Koroglu, and Omar high ground of the Murovdag mountain range. During the same year, to improve his military proficiency, he completed a three-month course at the Tuzla Infantry School (Tuzla Piyade Okulu) in Istanbul, Turkey.

Between 1995 and 2017, he rose from the rank of a motorized rifle platoon commander to a military unit commander. In July 2014, he entered the Military Academy of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan and got a master’s degree in military administration. From April 2017 until his death, he held the position of first deputy commander of a military unit - chief of staff.

He received numerous awards for his outstanding achievements. By the Decree of the President of Azerbaijan dated June 24, 2003, he was awarded the Medal "For Military Merit", dated June 25, 2009, the Medal "For the Fatherland", dated June 24, 201, the Order "For Service to the Fatherland" III degrees. For participation in the April battles of 2016, he was awarded the Order "For Service to the Fatherland" II degree.

Also, by the relevant orders of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan, he was awarded medals of all three degrees "For Impeccable Service", jubilee medals "10th Anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1991-2001)", "90th Anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan" (1918-2008)", "95th Anniversary of the Armed Forces (1918-2013)", "100th Anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1918-2018)", and was also awarded the medals "Veteran of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan" and "For Distinction in Military Service" of the III degree.

From April 2 to 4, 2016, he took part in the battles for the heights in the village of Talish as Chief of Staff of the 1st Army Corps and was wounded. One of the posts in this direction was later named in his honor. On June 25, 2019, Polad Hashimov was promoted to the rank of major general and then appointed Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan.

Major general of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan Polad Israil oghlu Hashimov, heroically died during fierce battles on July 14, 2020, preventing an attack attempt by the Armenian Armed Forces in the Tovuz direction of the front. On July 14, the body of Major General Polad Hashimov was first taken to the village of Vandam in the Gabala region, where he was born, and then to the city of Sumgait, where he lived. On July 15, 2020, he was buried in the II Alley of Honor.
